In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
