Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
