The White House confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official directed the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to execute staff reductions.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but not the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated.
